Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving!  My day was filled with lots of good food, extended family (I actually didn't see anyone in my immediate family today - go figure) and time driving up and down the highway.  It was great to see everyone and I am looking forward to getting together again soon.  Now I'm about to slip into a food coma.  :)

New Skillz

Last Saturday was a long, busy but really fun day.  I started the day at Knit and Caboodle at the beginning knitting class I bought a Groupon for.  My friend from high school, Ariel, taught it.  After a 2 hour class, this is what I had to show for it:

Kinda sad, I know.

In case you were unaware, knitting is hard.  It takes quite a bit of concentration and counting and it's not very forgiving of mistakes, as you can see by my "breathing holes" in my little swatch of knitting.  Definitely not something you just pick up in a day.  I could probably learn if I took some more classes or something.

I decided to learn to crochet that day too to see which I liked better/was better at/ caught on to.  Nellie and I made a quick run to Hobby Lobby (which was fun in and of itself - I love the craft store) and then she taught me a basic stitch and what to do.  I caught on a little quicker and was able to accomplish this on Sunday:

Not quite so sad.  I'll try this one.

Since I picked up crocheting a little better and quicker, I decided to try it for now.  Nellie is an excellent teacher and I'm pretty pleased with the progress I've made with this project.  Which I feel I should mention has progressed significantly beyond the picture.  I have made a few mistakes but that's how you learn, right?  The swatch shown is double crochet stitches (well, mostly anyway... I was learning, ok?) and I'm excited to learn some more.  I am actually going to go hang out with my Aunt Kris in a few weeks (who also crochets) to learn a few things from her too, like maybe how to read a pattern.  Nellie said she doesn't usually use them and I would like to learn how to at least read one so hopefully Aunt Kris can help me out.  In the mean time, Nellie and have spent some time hanging out with our yarn like little old ladies.  I'm getting a glimpse of our future, Nell.

Saturday was also my sister Kristen's birthday, so I met my mom, sister, nephew, cousin Danielle and one of my sister's friends at El Maguey for her birthday dinner.  It was yummy as usual and I gave my sister her wine glasses (her standard birthday gift - she drinks a lot of wine and breaks a TON of glasses.  Girlfriend is really hard on them.)  From there I headed out to meet up with Aimee and Andy for a trivia night for Andy's brother's baseball team.  It was excellent to see them and our team took 3rd!  The highlight of the night was definitely the song lyrics round.  We had fun singing and Jaci, Aimee and I made up dances/hand movements to songs like the Backstreet Boys' "That Way" and Aimee and Andy danced to "It Must Have Been Love."

After trivia was over we went to Columbo's for a few drinks and to hang out a bit.  I think I might make friends with Jaci - we had fun.  Maybe at least go to lunch or something since she works close to me.  We'll see.

Not bad for a Saturday.

Picture catch up:  Halloween with Nellie and the girls, bull riding in Dallas and a trip to KC to visit Pagie and Kim.  Whirlwind travel but it was fun!
